Loan Counseling Department

A loan counselor is responsible for working with borrowers and other interested parties via phone to assist them with making payments, customer service, issue resolution and available options to avoid default and delinquency.

General Responsibilities

1. Must have outstanding attendance.
2. Learn, retain and utilize a large body of complex information and work with a computer system.
3. Receive and make telephone calls regarding student loan accounts. Problem solve accounts. Must be able to deal with a high volume of calls while maintaining a professional phone disposition regardless of the nature of the call. Call borrowers for follow up, returning messages in queues.
4. Research accounts and provide information to our callers. Information on loan topics range from the very simple to the extremely complex.
5. Must remain logged into the phone system and seated for the entire shift (minus breaks and lunch).
6. Make satisfactory payment arrangements on inbound delinquent accounts while following all student loan rules and regulations. This includes making arrangements to temporarily stop payments (deferments/forbearances) when applicable.
7. Learn and utilize Customer Service Scripts. Quality assurance is conducted throughout the week via taped and live monitoring.
8. Update computer system with notes after each and every communication, with brief yet accurate information.

Qualifications

1. Minimum one year customer service experience.
2. Outstanding communication skills and telephone etiquette.
3. Must be detail-oriented and focused with good time management skills.
4. Must possess excellent written and oral skills.
5. Good math skills required.
6. Keyboarding of 30+ words per minute.
7. Must be able to stay seated for long periods of time.
8. Must be available to work 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday.
