Alert: Phishing Scam Uses Real ID Hooks

You could become a victim of a new identity theft scam and not know it.

Iowa Student Loan recently heard from a customer who received a call stating that Iowa Student Loan was in financial difficulty and her account was in jeopardy – neither of which is true. The caller asked for the customer's Social Security number and account number. Fortunately, the customer did not share the information.

What is Phishing?

This call may have been a new spin on "phishing," which is a form of online fraud that has increased in frequency over the past few years. Phishers try to trick people into sharing personal information that can then be sold to commit identity theft.

We advise all customers and consumers to protect their personal data.

What You Can Do

If ...Then ...
The caller is asking for personal account information and you suspect it is not a legitimate call from Iowa Student Loan. Hang up. If you have caller ID, note the telephone number. You may call Iowa Student Loan at our toll-free number,
(800) 243-7552, to verify the call.
You are certain the call is a "phisher." Contact the Iowa Student Loan Privacy Department at (800) 507-3814 to report the incident.
