Military Deferment
You may qualify for a Military Service Deferment on your federal loans if you do either of the following:
- Serve on active duty during war, other military operation or national emergency.
- Perform qualifying National Guard duty during war, other military operation or national emergency.
You may qualify for a Post-Active Duty Student Deferment on your federal loans if:
- You are a member or a retired member of the National Guard or other reserve component of the Armed Forces.
- Your service includes a period on or after Oct. 1, 2007.
- You were enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school when you were called to active duty or within six months before you were called to active duty.
Eligible Federal Loans Programs
Federal loans programs eligible for Military Service Deferment or Post-Active Duty Student Deferment include:
- William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loan).
- Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP).
- Federal Perkins Loans.
Note: Assistance may also be available to borrowers with Iowa Student Loan private loans.
