Public Service Deferment

Borrowers must have at least one outstanding loan made before July 1, 1993.

A Public Service Deferment can be used for:

• Deferment for borrowers with at least one Stafford or Supplemental Loan for Students (SLS) loan made before July 1, 1993, who are on full-time active duty in the Armed Forces or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or who are Commissioned Officers in the Public Health Service.
• Deferment for volunteers in the Peace Corps, ACTION program or tax-exempt organization with at least one outstanding Stafford or SLS loan made before July 1, 1993.
• Deferment for borrowers with at least one outstanding PLUS loan made before Aug. 15, 1983, who are on full-time active duty in the Armed Forces or are Commissioned Officers in the Public Health Service.
• Deferment for volunteers in the Peace Corps, ACTION program or tax-exempt organization with at least one outstanding PLUS loan made before Aug. 15, 1983.
